Cannabis Reclassification

Cannabis has been reclassified from a Class B drug to a Class C drug. Hash, blow, weed, dope, grass, pot. Whatever you call it it's still against the law. So it's worth remembering that you can still be arrested for possession and the drug will be confiscated in every case. Supplying cannabis could lead to 14 years in prison. Cannabis impairs your driving ability too, and penalties for driving under its influence include a maximum 12 month ban, up to 6 months in prison and a fine of up to £5000.

Commenting on the reclassification of cannabis Deputy Justice Minister at the time Hugh Henry said:

"There is a perception that cannabis is safe and has been decriminalised for personal use. That perception is a myth. Cannabis is not safe – it brings risks to both physical and mental health. Recently there has been new research published, which appears to reinforce the risks to mental health.

Reclassification recognises that while harmful, some drugs are more harmful than others. Cannabis carries risks but it is not as dangerous as, say, heroin and cocaine. But dabbling could well leave you with a criminal record, as well as damaging your health."
