Reclassification of methylamphetamines

Issued: 18 January 2007

Drugs reclassification is a reserved issue.

  • Although methylamphetamine use in Scotland is relatively rare we cannot be complacent.  International experience shows methylamphetamine has the potential to be extremely damaging to individuals, families and communities.
  • Reclassification will bring tougher penalties for those peddling this dangerous drug – helping to prevent the escalation in the illicit use of methylamphetamine and the social problems it causes.
  • The Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency will be taking part in a UK campaign to alert Scottish emergency services and nightclubs about the dangers of methylamphetamine and the impact of reclassification.
