- Info & Advice on Drugs In Scotland

Listen More

Kids of all ages say they want their parents to listen to them and understand them more. Teenagers most of all.

Some suffer in silence, thinking their parents won't understand their problems - you might be concerned about drugs, alcohol or solvents while they're worrying about something else.

Your kid's views can be a surprise - and they're not always influenced by their friends.

Here are some conversation Do's and Don'ts:

  • Don't force the issue. Some of the best conversations come out of the blue - like when you're clearing up after a meal, or watching TV.
  • Do listen with an open mind.
  • Do say what you believe.
  • Do show you care.
  • Don't preach.
  • Don't use scare tactics.

'Parents don't talk to you; they tell you stuff, and I don't think that's right. I want them to listen to me too.'
15-year-old girl.
